After graduation, Hal was drafted and spent two years in the army at the end of the Korean War.  Hal returned to Fort Collins where he began his career in education as a physical education teacher at Waverly School.  Hal spent the next 40 years teaching and coaching, first at Lincoln Junior High, before moving to Lesher Junior High as an assistant principal.  "Coach", as all his students called him, finished his career at Wellington Junior High where he worked with high-risk students.
