Scholastic Art and Writing Competition

Congratulations to Milena Brown, Kelsey Morris, Jazz Palmer, and Lauren Thurgood, 7th graders at Kinard Core Knowledge Middle School who recently received Silver Key Awards for their Poetry in the West Region-at-Large Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

In addition, Milena Brown and Troy Sisson also received Honorable Mention Awards in Poetry, and Lauren Thurgood won an additional Silver Key Award for her Flash Fiction.  The West Region-at-Large includes Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, now in its 90th year, continues to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative and artistic teenagers in the United States, and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

It is an incredible honor as a 7th grader to receive the second and third highest awards given in the Region-at-Large.  Most winners are high school students, and these awards are given to only the top 10-15% of submissions in the entire region.  Silver Key and Honorable Mention Awards are a high honor in this national competition.

Barnes and Noble Selects Kinard Student Winner

Congratulations to, Megan Menard, 8th Grade English teacher, for winning 1st runner-up in279 the 2012 "My Favorite Teacher Contest" sponsored by Barnes and Noble! Ms. Menard was nominated in a wonderfully written essay by 8th grader, Reagan Kissel. A ceremony was held to honor Ms. Menard and Reagan on April 19th, at the Fort Collins Barnes and Noble where Ms. Menard received a Barnes and Noble gift card and a set of classic books. She has also been entered into the regional contest with a chance to win a Nook Tablet and a $500 gift card. Good luck to her and Reagan as they move on to the regional selection!

Please enjoy reading Reagan’s essay below:

Dear Official,

I think you should know about the best teacher that I have ever had. She has changed who I am inside and outside the school building. Since her job is to help me in the school, I will start there. My leap from my writing last year to the advanced level I write at now is astronomical. Although it was a bit of a struggle initially this year, I have come out stronger. I feel as though I can really express myself in writing now. Helping us to perfect the little things in our writing, such as formatting, is one of the lovely things about her. She is one of the teachers who give us timely feedback. When I am stuck I know I can email her and she will respond quickly and helpfully.

She encourages us to be the very best we can be in and out of the brick building we go to each day. In our writing she pushes us to use strong vocabulary and voice unique to us to help our writing shine. Although things can get to be a challenge in her class, it really pushes me to the advanced level I can write at.  The neatest thing, in my opinion, happened recently. Some boys were giving consent to be made fun of. She overheard and let them know that no one will be made fun of. She told them that they have more character than that. “Be the man you want to be.” What a perfect line. I broke into a huge smile when she told them that. I mean, how perfect? Our writing is supposed to represent us, not just be a bunch of words written down, but actually apply to our life.

To me, she is like a tour guide and a friend mushed into a happy little package. The tour guide part of her steers us in the right direction, makes suggestions for improvement. Our goal is the finish line, but hers is the journey to get there. The friend part of her makes us laugh, makes us think, makes us want to make a change. I love walking into her class each day because I know that I will have fun and feel something.

The wonderful teacher I have just described to you in Ms. Menard: English teacher, tour guide, friend, amazing role model, and my favorite teacher.

Kinard Student Wins Culinary Competition

Congratulations to James Folkestad, Kinard 6th grade student, who earned a spot in Poudre School District culinary history by winning the 2011 Middle School Culinary Competition!  The contest was open to all students in the district, and James was one of several students who submitted recipes in October. Read the full story below which is a article on coloradoan.com or watch the Kids Culinary Competition video on Channel 10.

"James Folkestad of Kinard Core Knowledge Middle School finishes his dish Thursday, during PSD's middle school culinary competition at Fort Collins High School. "

Kinard Middle School student James Folkestad says presentation is as important as preparation when preparing an award-winning dish.

Folkestad, 11, would know. Just after he was caught adding a final garnish of basil onto his original dish, "Mother's Day Morsels," he earned a spot in Poudre School District culinary history Thursday afternoon by winning the 2011 Middle School Culinary Competition.

"Presentation is important," Folkestad said. "I really like to dink around with the food and make it pretty."

Folkestad was one of seven student competitors who began submitting their original snack recipes in early October. The contest was open to all middle school students in PSD.

Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Edie Eckles, who helped judge the competition Thursday, said she was impressed by the creativity, skill and poise shown by each contestant.

"It was all so delicious," Eckles said. "It was very hard to pick a winner."

Folkestad's creation, Mother's Day Morsels, is similar to caprese toast, he said.

"The bottom base layer is artisan bread," Folkestad said. "On top of that is a slice of mozzarella cheese. On top of that is a mixture of basil, tomato, salt, red peppers and it's all held together by olive oil."

To add his "secret weapon" of spectacular presentation, Folkestad garnished each dish delicately with a leaf or two of basil from his home garden.

Craig Schneider, with PSD Child Nutrition, said that all students put an impressive amount of effort into crafting their dishes.

"They came prepared and did a great job," Schneider said. "There was a lot of thought put into the items they made."

Cans Around the Oval Celebration, Photos

A big Mustang thank you to our entire community.  As a school, we totaled 7,793.2  pounds of food for our food drive.  If we take out the double weight amounts for the food drive, (high need items for the food bank), the Kinard community brought in over 5000 actual pounds of food to be donated to the Larimer County Food Bank.  Feel proud to be a Mustang, because we showed the power we have as a community to make a difference—and we’ve made a huge difference.   Amazing work Kinard.

Thank you for stepping out and helping those who needed it.  For more information, visit the CSU Cans website at  http://www.slice.colostate.edu/cans-around-the-oval.aspx or the Larimer County Food Bank at http://www.foodbanklarimer.org/.
