About Me

Visual Arts Grades 6 – 8

Education and Professional Background:

Mrs. Houston is an artist that loves sharing her years of acquired art techniques and expertise with students. In 2023 she graduated with distinction from Colorado State University, with a BFA in K-12 Art Education. Teaching middle school is absolutely where she wants to be. While realistic drawing and painting are her biggest strength, she finds it too difficult to pick a favorite media or style and will encourage young artists to experiment as much as possible. A few of her art specialties include (but are not limited to) 3D sculpture, pottery/ceramics, metals/jewelry making, fiber arts and printmaking. Before coming to Kinard, Mrs. Houston was a long-term substitute teacher in a Special Education classroom at Webber Middle School, working with students with a wide range of abilities and needs. She loves collaborating with fellow teachers, paras, and families to create a welcoming space in the classroom studio for every artist.

Personal Interests and Hobbies:

When Mrs. Houston is not in the Kinard Art Studio, she is spending time with her spouse Jesse Houston, (who teaches math at Webber Middle School), and their cat, Theo. She loves to travel, and have lived all over the U.S. (and Japan) when Mr. Houston was enlisted the NAVY. She is originally from Southwest Michigan, but over the past 4 years, Fort Collins has been a very welcoming and beloved place to call home. Mrs. Houston loves finding new houseplants to add to her growing collection, doing small hikes around NoCo, casual photography, going to concerts, and most of all, drawing and painting outside in her travel sketchbooks!
